Everyone faces difficult patches in life. Even when we’re working hard and doing our best, a tough turn of events can knock things off course.
In moments like that, having someone step in and lend a hand can make all the difference.
Here at The Riverside Project, we know that when real community exists, challenging circumstances don’t have to define a family’s future. When people show up for one another, vulnerable children and families in our city can find steady ground again.
Recently, we saw that belief come to life in a powerful way.
A Mother in Crisis
Our team was recently made aware of a crisis that was impacting a member of our community:
A hardworking single mom of 4 connected to the child welfare system had lost her only vehicle when it caught fire.
Without nearby family or support to lean on, transportation quickly became a barrier for this mother as she worked to care for her children and maintain employment.
Despite her best efforts, this event had truly flipped her world upside down. She had a good paying job, but when she lost the car, she couldn’t drive to work anymore, and subsequently lost her job. At this point, she was walking her kids to daycare and trying to find jobs nearby so she could provide for her family.
After the fire, there wasn’t any time to sit with what had happened. She had to move quickly to figure out next steps after losing an essential resource she relied on overnight.
That’s when this mother’s situation was shared with our Response Network—an initiative that bridges the gap between urgent needs from local families involved in the foster care system and organizations and individuals who are ready to help. The role of our Response Network is to make those connections swiftly and effectively so that families in need can receive meaningful practical and relational support as soon as possible.
In this case, the request our team received was for help with rent and clothing. But as we learned more about this family’s story, we realized that the lack of transportation was the common thread holding everything else back. What we didn’t know yet was that one of our community partners was about to step in and transform this story in a big way.
A Local Auto Repair Shop Steps Up
Within a month of our team receiving this request for support, a local auto shop, Clutch Automotive, happened to reach out to us with an offer to repair and donate a vehicle to a family in need.
When we explained the situation at hand and this mother’s needs, their team quickly stepped up to the plate. We saw God at work in how quickly this mother received what she needed. What stayed with us most was Clutch’s kindness and trust. They didn’t just offer to donate a car—they trusted us to choose the family we felt it would impact most. No questions asked.
Because of their willingness to say “yes,” this mom received a safe, reliable car—restoring her ability to get to work, care for her children, and move forward with stability and dignity. The gift of a vehicle opened this mother’s world back up and gave her the support she needed to get her family’s future back on track.
It was truly a privilege to be part of connecting the right support at the right time for this hardworking mother. She expressed sincere appreciation for everyone who came alongside her, and her story is one that will stick with us for a long time. We’re so thankful for the ongoing ways Clutch Automotive continues to support kids and families across our city.
How You Can Make a Difference
This story is one small picture of what it looks like when Houston shows up and people just like you decide that their “yes” matters.
That’s what our Response Network is all about: building bridges between families in need and people with resources who care.
We started this initiative because people who are impacted by the child welfare system are often some of the most vulnerable people in our city.
That’s why, in partnership with DFPS and other child-placing agencies, we identify the immediate needs of children in foster care, biological families, and relative caregivers, then connect those families to people and organizations who can help!

Sometimes that support looks like furniture.
Sometimes it looks like baby items.
And sometimes it looks like a car that puts a family back on steady ground.
Watch our AS ONE documentary to see four other powerful, real-life examples of how we have collaborated with community partners to bring life-changing support to our neighbors here in Houston:
The more people who join our network of support, the more connections will be available when families face urgent needs. Without partners like Clutch Automotive, it could have taken months for this mother to regain reliable transportation. Instead, the community was able to respond quickly.
Everyone can do something. Together, we can do so much more. Whether you’re a family, agency, nonprofit, church, business, or passionate individual, there is a place for you to serve along The River.
